Faceting art

What is facetting? A process of cutting regular planes on stone in a predetermined pattern that is related to the stone’s crystalline structure, and is a skill that is learned over a period of time, a long time in some instances depending on your commitment . Rough planning is an important operation to maximize the weight of the gemstone to be cut from a rough piece, for colored stones, the planning is usually done by eye, according to the experience of the cutter. That can lead to costly errors, as the best shape and location of the future gem can be quite difficult to imagine in some cases, and even a fraction of millimeter of miss-orientation can significantly lower the weight and price of the future gem. Precision cutting, also called custom cutting, is a combination of faceting techniques and machinery facilities which allow us to cut the stones using original faceting designs. In standard commercial cutting, the lapidary usually tries to save as much weight of the rough stone as possible, with little care of angles and brilliance of the stone. The quality of polishing and symmetry in mass-produced stones is also normally quite low, quite the opposite of Amado Folch where the gems are cut to achieve the best color and the highest quality, each rough piece is carefully studied to obtain the highest quality gem.
