Heliodor — Yellow Beryl (“Sun Stone”)
Heliodor is a golden-yellow variety of beryl, valued for its warm range of hues—from pale yellow to rich golden tones, sometimes with slightly greenish or orange nuances. With a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, it is well suited for jewelry when properly cut and set.
Its color is mainly caused by iron (Fe³⁺) ions in the crystal structure. The name heliodor was first used as a trade name for golden beryl from Rössing (Namibia), but today it is commonly applied to gem-quality golden-yellow beryl from different origins.
Treatments and color
Some greenish-yellow heliodor may be heated to shift the color toward aquamarine. Conversely, some aquamarine can be irradiated to produce yellow tones. For this reason, reliable disclosure and gemological verification are important when assessing value.
Size and occurrenc
Heliodor is found in several deposits worldwide. Material from Ukraine, among others, has produced exceptionally large crystals and fine faceted stones.
Care
Heliodor can be cleaned safely with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if the gem has inclusions or internal features—when in doubt, consult a qualified gemologist before using mechanical cleaning methods.
