Peridot, an extreme gemstone
It is found in lava, in meteorites, and deep within Earth’s mantle. Peridot forms about 400 km beneath the Earth’s surface, in the mantle, at temperatures between 800 and 1,200°C, and its typical deposits are in volcanoes that bring mantle material to the surface. As a curiosity, some meteorites that have fallen on our planet contain peridot crystals; in Russia, some of these extraterrestrial crystals have even been cut as gemstones.
It is one of the few gemstones whose color comes from its composition rather than from impurities in its crystal structure. Therefore, peridot is always green, though it can appear in different shades. The ancient Egyptians mined peridot on Zabargad Island in the Red Sea and called it the “gem of the sun.” Legend has it that peridot was Cleopatra’s favorite gemstone. The Crusaders brought it to Europe, where it can be found in many medieval churches. The largest faceted peridot was found on Zabargad Island; it weighs 319 carats and belongs to the Smithsonian Institution.
The finest peridot specimens are mined in the Suppatt region near the Himalayas in northwestern Kashmir, Pakistan. They have unmatched color and clarity, but supply is very limited due to harsh winters that prevent mining outside the months of June through September.
